Details

Upper Barn is a eco-friendly, newly converted barn that comfortably sleeps up to four people. Situated in the heart of the South Downs National Park, it boasts stunning views over the Arun Valley in West Sussex and sits directly on the iconic South Downs Way walking and biking trail.

The accommodation includes one double bedroom and two single sofa beds in the main living area, along with a modern, well-equipped kitchen and a bathroom featuring a walk-in shower.

During your stay, the entire third-of-an-acre walled site is exclusively yours. You can unwind in the charming shepherd’s hut or gather around the fire pit in the evenings. For cyclists, there’s a wash-down area and secure storage space available. Originally built as a “fold” or small livestock yard, the barn has been thoughtfully transformed into a private, off-grid eco-lodging. The original structure has been preserved to maintain its rustic character, offering guests a peaceful, low-impact retreat immersed in nature. Pets are welcome and there are superb walking opportunities in every direction.

Upper Barn’s off-grid status is supported by solar PV panels with battery storage, solar thermal panels for hot water and an on-site sewage system, making it an environmentally friendly choice.

In addition to direct access to the South Downs Way, the Monarch’s Way and a network of picturesque footpaths weave through the surrounding West Sussex countryside. Birdwatchers will be in their element, with frequent sightings of kestrels, buzzards and red kites overhead. The property is also close to RSPB reserves at Amberley Wildbrooks and Pulborough Brooks, as well as the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust’s 60-acre site in Arundel. With minimal light pollution, Upper Barn is a perfect spot for stargazing on clear nights.

Perched above a disused chalk quarry, the site overlooks the Amberley Working Museum, which is just a 10-minute walk away. Other nearby attractions include the historic Arundel Castle, the Goodwood Estate and Parham House & Gardens. A selection of local pubs and a well-stocked village shop are within easy walking distance, as is Amberley station, offering regular rail connections to London and the South Coast.
