According to local tradition it was once a dairy, and the oldest part may date from as early as the 1400s. It is listed (Grade II) as a building of historical interest. The building has been used as a bed and breakfast since the 1940s.
It was home to Thomas Geen a mason and sea merchant from 1833 to 1863. He led the revolt against harbour tolls imposed by the Lord of the Manor. His son Charles was born here in 1840. Charles was the founder of the Electric Light Company in 1890. Artist and headmaster of the Barnstaple School of Art, Theodore Charbonnier lived here with his family from 1899-1920.
